The work expressed in this collection documents the wealth found in Maryland during the colonial period. It is the result of research begun by Salisbury University students as part of a graduate course on 17th century Delmarva History using Skinner’s inventories. The following is taken directly from meeting notes found in the collection. The research began in the 17th Century Delmarva History graduate course in June, 1998 will provide a jumping off point for further analysis of provincial Maryland and her regional parts. The inventories, as they were compiled in Skinner’s abstracts for the years 1670 – 1700, were organized by the 12 existing counties of the period and further broken down alphabetically, chronologically and by decanting wealth.

This collection contains the administrative files, fieldwork recordings, and photographs collected by the Delmarva Folklife Project between 1997 and 2003. The project documented Delmarva folk arts and cultural traditions through oral history interviews, photographs, video recordings, and collected materials used for research. Additionally, it promoted regional folk arts through mentoring programs, collection distribution to cultural institutions, and two 2004 publications: From Bridge to Boardwalk: An Audio Journey Across Maryland's Eastern Shore and Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions of the Delmarva Peninsula: An Interpretive Resource Guide. Also included are four boxes containing the reproduced slides and tapes that were distributed to various cultural institutions in the region.

In 1992, former Salisbury University student Stephen C. Bynum collected folk material surrounding the commercial crabbing on the Eastern Shore. In this paper, he explains the different methods used to catch crabs. To supplement his project, he interviewed a couple of watermen to learn about the procedures of constructing crab-pots, a vanishing craft as more and more crabbers purchased their pots. The interviews reveal how crabbers adapt their practices to the changes in the environment, natural and economic. Tapes and photographs enclosed.

The collection of images captures local businesses, school buildings, public events, watercraft, natural settings and area attractions from the mid-1950s to the 1990s. There are reproductions of historic photographs of Salisbury and the Delmarva Peninsula dating back to the 1850s that Wootten collected. Also included are documents pertaining to Wootten's Coast Guard service and his family's history.

The first is entitled "Report of the Oyster Fisheries of MD" written in 1874. The second is a report by Captain Hunter Davidson of the Commanding State Oyster Police Force in October 1869, and the third is a manuscript sent to Maryland Governor Austin L. Crothers on December 28th, 1909.

The photographs of the Purnell and Winder families document the lives of Oscar Moore Purnell, and his descendants, originally of Worcester County, Maryland. The materials were compiled by Richard Bayly Winder, III, the grandson of Oscar Purnell, and depict individuals from four generations of the family during the early 1900s to 1950. Many photographs feature the Oscar M. Purnell house in Snow Hill, Maryland, and the surrounding rural areas of Worcester County. There are also photographs of the Ocean City, Maryland beach and boardwalk during the first half of the 20th century, and a few personal records, and ephemera relating to various members of the Winder family.

The Richard and Jane Yantis collection consists of the genealogical research notes of Richard and Jane Yantis from 1994-2011. The collection offers insight into the genealogies of several dozen families, including the Brittingham and Fooks families of Maryland. It includes copies of tithtables for Northampton County, Virginia from 1662-1677, and a Bible from the Hurst family of Dorchester County, Maryland. The Bible contains genealogical information on the Hurst family from 1821-1910.

Dr. Wroten's teaching materials include articles and notes he had for specific topics, such as the American Civil War, Native American history, early colonial life, and local history, as well as syllabi and research papers from students. Included in this collection are also a number of his published articles from his newspaper column as well as scripts from his TV program on WBOC.
